My Counseling Approach
Connection Before Correction
I believe meaningful change begins with connection.
My approach to counseling is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that you are the author of your own story. My role isn't to tell you who you should be or how you should live your life. Instead, I walk alongside you as we explore what's happening, identify patterns, recognize strengths, develop practical coping strategies, and work toward the life you want to create.
In our work together, I value:
Connection before correction.
Feeling heard and understood comes before trying to change something.
Understanding before intervention.
We explore what's happening and why before deciding what may help.
Strengths before symptoms.
You are more than a diagnosis, challenge, or difficult season.
Collaboration before direction.
Therapy is something we do together, not something that is done to you.
Hope before pathology.
Your struggles matter, but they don't have to define your future.
My goal is to create a space where you can show up authentically, feel seen and heard, and leave counseling feeling more empowered, hopeful, and equipped to move forward.

Sheila Petty, MS, CMHC, LPC-Associate, NCC
I chose the counseling profession because I believe change is possible and because people deserve a place where they can speak openly without immediately being reduced to a problem that needs to be fixed.
As a counselor, I'm intentional about creating an environment where clients feel comfortable being themselves. I remain curious about your experiences, listen for what matters to you, and work collaboratively with you to identify goals that are meaningful for your life.
My counseling style incorporates evidence-informed approaches while recognizing that no two people experience life in exactly the same way. Therapy should reflect the individual sitting in front of me, not simply a diagnosis or textbook description.
I want you to leave our work together feeling understood, empowered, hopeful, and better equipped to move toward your goals.
Faith-based counseling can also be incorporated at the client's request.
